Environmental Health & Safety

Whether testing to support product MSDS or label requirements, detecting contamination in particulate or chemicals in vapor, or examining raw material or regulated industrial waste, RJ Lee Group materials experts work with industry clients in a mutual concern for workers’ health and safety. Many production and manufacturing industries face challenges keeping the occupational environment and product-use environment clear of contaminants. RJ Lee Group’s team of experts is familiar with industry standards and guidelines that ensure occupational safety and health and can assess potential negative impacts and determine where controls are necessary.

Beyond Air Monitoring

We observe manufacturing processes to uncover any environmental or occupational issues and recommend changes to reduce potential exposure and contamination. Our expertise ranges from the regulatory demands of hospital pharmacy and clean room environments, to the characterization of aggregates and nuisance dust in the construction industry, to the monitoring of air in coal mines and examination of flyash from coal-burning plants. Our experts contribute to a safe and clean working environment by providing testing, prevention and control techniques such as: OSHA, MSHA and EPA-mandated analytical methods for clients who routinely conduct compliance monitoring for asbestos, crystalline silica, metals and vapors. Routine monitoring and analysis of air samples at each step in a process to establish a benchmark for acceptable clean air levels. Nanoparticle assessments and characterization.

Testing Services

Whether conducting compliance monitoring in the workplace or sampling to detect the source of a contaminant in the production process, RJ Lee Group can design the sampling plan, undertake the monitoring and collect and analyze the samples. Our experts are well-informed and current in standardized methodologies mandated by government standards such as OSHA, NIOSH, MSHA, and the EPA. We can determine product and materials compliance with standards and specifications and conduct testing to establish MSDS and product label information.

Computer-Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM)

CCSEM combines a scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray analyzer (EDS) and digital scan generator controlled by intelligent software. Using this technique, large numbers of individual particles can be located, sized and characterized quickly, i.e., seconds per particle. These particles can then be grouped into particle type (species) classes based on their elemental composition and shape.

Automated Steel Cleanliness Analysis Tool (ASCAT)

The demand for cleaner steel makes characterizing inclusions trapped during the solidification process increasingly important. Once there is a fundamental understanding of the origins of these inclusions, it is possible to make informed decisions on how to control their formation. Further separation of the inclusions in terms of composition and size focuses on those inclusions that impact quality. Using this knowledge, clients can evaluate their process to gauge how changes to their process might affect the composition of the inclusion. The ASCAT, developed by RJ Lee Group, is an automated analysis tool that quickly identifies and characterizes inclusions. The ASCAT generates cost savings by increasing production and reducing downgrades to produce cleaner steels.

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

RJ Lee Group builds LIMS specific to our clients" individual laboratory environments, disciplines and industries. Based on three decades of in-house laboratory experience, our customizable, LIMS are designed to manage complex processes such as sample management, instrument data management and coordination of standards to help meet accreditation requirements.

Comprehensive Litigation Support

RJ Lee Group"s experts represent decades of specialist knowledge with strengths in many scientific disciplines. Together with our substantial analytical resources, this depth of experience allows us to develop analytical protocols which we can use to deliver results that address specific key issues. Though a methodology or investigative course developed during a particular study may be uniquely tailored to the situation at issue, the analytical methods used are based on established, scientifically accepted methods.

Data Management

In the event that the project generates substantial amounts of data that need to be collected and interpolated, manipulated and interpreted we have the ability to leverage our information management expertise to accommodate that need. We have the staff, expertise and experience in compiling large data sets, integrating extrinsic data and presenting results in an understandable context for client briefings, meetings with regulatory bodies and at trial.

Gunshot Residue Analysis

Developed by RJ Lee Group, computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy for the identification of gunshot residue (GSR) particles is now widely accepted in the courts. This automated analysis allows us to provide accurate and reliable data along with exceptional turnaround time. Not only are we experts in analyzing GSR, but we are also capable of studying GSR plume distribution using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to compare sampled GSR to that of the suspected weapon.

Trace Evidence Analysis

As a materials characterization laboratory, our expertise usually lies in what cannot be seen by the unaided human eye. We are experts in investigating and identifying materials on both a nano- and macro-scale. Trace evidence can also play a role in accident investigations where contact or movement between objects will often leave residue that needs to be identified. Since most trace evidence is classified as microscopic, we are expert in selecting the most appropriate analytical technique suited to the sample material to identify and characterize it.
