Industrial Hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, preventing, and controlling environmental factors or stresses in, or associated with, the workplace. These may cause sickness, impaired health, injuries or discomfort among workers and community members. A company or institution`s industrial hygiene services are the core of their safety program. Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion. They include the mineral fibers chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, actinolite, and any of these materials that have been chemically treated or altered.

Lead is a toxic heavy metal that was used for many years in products found in and around homes and buildings. In the past, lead was also used regularly in fuel, paint, ceramics, caulk, pipes, and solder among other things. Lead can also be emitted into the air from industrial sources and leaded aviation gasoline, and lead can enter drinking water from plumbing materials. 

Exposure to elevated levels of mold can cause a myriad of health concerns. Mold is a known allergen, irritant, and asthma trigger for many with the condition. It can also cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) and some types of mold are known pathogens that can cause infections, especially in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system. Some types of mold even produce toxins known as mycotoxins.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NISOH), indoor environmental quality (IEQ) refers to the quality of a building`s environment in relation to the health and wellbeing of those who occupy space within it. IEQ is determined by many factors, including lighting, air quality, and damp conditions.

The OSHA Construction Standard (29 CFR 1926) was issued to protect employees of a sector of the U.S. economy which continues to have the highest rate of work-related injuries. Legionella is a type of bacteria that can cause a form of pneumonia known as Legionnaires` disease as well as a condition known as Pontiac Fever. Each year, between 8,000 and 18,000 people in the United States are hospitalized with Legionnaires` disease. However, many infections are likely not diagnosed properly or reported, so this number may be much higher. Legionnaires` disease is usually treated successfully with antibiotics, but it can be fatal.
