Destratification - Diffusion Aeration Of Waters

SHARE

Our lakes and water routes have been victims of the contamination with nutrients from antrophogen sources for a long time. Also drinking water lakes and reservoires can become eutrophicated by the input of phosphorus and nitrogen from point or diffuse sources. In addition air-transferred contaminations have also to be considered. All these affected waters require assistance for their stabilisation. Without oxygen the aquatic systems can`t survive. In a healthy water a dynamic equilibrium between the oxygenation by the atmosphere and by photosynthesis and the oxygen consumtion by the process of mineralizing of organic material is established. In a dirty water the dynamic equilibrium is shifted in such a way that an overproduction of organic material is dominating. Hence it follows that more oxygen is necessary for the decay of the sedimenting organic material than it can be supplied to the deep layers of the water.

A critical situation is caused, which brings the entire biological life in danger. For the protection of the water an increase of oxygen entry must be achieved. The diffusion aeration represents an effective treatment for the increase of the oxygen concentrations of shallow unstratified lakes, ponds, damed up parts of rivers and channels.

The diffusion aeration and the circulation produced thereby is a frequently used technology. With this technology the oxygen deficiency in waters resulting from eutrophication and acute contamination with organic matters, can be prevented. Shallow lakes, which exhibit a temperature stratification, can be obstructed in the development of a stratification.

With the diffusion aeration it is possible to positively affect the oxygen budget of contaminated waters. For the success of the diffusion aeration a sufficient dimensioning is important. AGO Hydroair has experience of many years within the range of the computer-assisted dimensioning of diffusion aeration systems. We are able to supply complete `turn-key` systems. AGO Hydroair further offers a service for municipalities, cities and industries, to supply mobile diffusion aeration systems at short notice for rent. These plants can be brought to the waters in shortest time (e.g. to a city pond or bathing lake) in order to prevent acute oxygen deficiency and dying of fishes.

Compressed air is supplied to specially dimensioned PE hoses, where the air escapes by nozzle bores. The volumetric air flow divides itself into many small bubbles, which rise to the water surface. The rising air bubbles cause a flow of water in direction to the surface. Oxygen-poor water from layers near of the sediments is transported to the surface, where it diverts horizontal. The oxygen exchange between the compressed air and the oxygen-poor water takes place on the one hand via the production of small bubbles and on the other hand via the horizontal current at the water surface. For the production of small bubbles nozzle bores are manufactured within the range of 0,5 - 2 mm with a special drilling procedure.

The perforated PE hose is installed on the bottom of waters. The positioning of the hose is made in such a way that it takes place in the deepest range of the lake or along the river bed direction. With a special technology it is possible to fix the aeration hoses at the bottom with weights without the flexibility is limited. If a soft sediment or mud layer is present in waters, a balloon assembly with soil weights can be made.

The equipment covers:

  • a compressor with final cooler
  • aeration hoses, possibly swimming hoses, anchor weights and buoys
  • Shutoff devices

AGO Hydroair offers the complete installation of diffusion aerating systems (own staff and management of construction site). The equipment is supplied to the lakeshore. The aeration hoses provided with nozzle bores are supplied completely rolled up on a drum and/or as bar. After assembly of the weights the hose is transported by a construction boat to the position on the water. Then the aeration hose is lowered and positioned by divers. By connection to the compressor the unit is directly operational. AGO Hydroair offers the possibility for investigation of the success of the treatment by monitoring the conditions of the water during the time of diffusion aeration.

By means of the diffusion aeration one will observe a rapid rise of the oxygen content in the water column. Waters damage and dying of fishes can be prevented. Waters gets the possibility of adjusting its oxygen budget again. This oxygen aeration procedure offers the possibility of repairing effectively and at short notice critical conditions of waters and of keeping thus nature and value for human recreation upright.
