SDS Aqua-Filter - Hydrodynamic Vortex Separator and Filtration Unit
SDS Aqua-Filter uses hydrodynamic and gravitational forces to remove gross pollutants from surface water runoff. It then filters out fine sediments, nutrients, heavy metals and hydrocarbons through percolation, adsorption, biological breakdown and ionic exchange, prior to final conveyance.
Aqua-Filter can be used as part of a complete water management programme, for example when connected upstream to an Aqua-Swirl unit and downstream to a GEOlight stormwater infiltration or attenuation system. Aqua-Filter provides a high level of water quality treatment through the use of a swirl chamber (Aqua-Swirl) for pre-treatment followed by a filtration chamber for secondary treatment. Aqua-Filter maximises the removal of suspended solids by up to 80%, nutrients, heavy metals and hydrocarbons from surface water run-off prior to conveyance to a suitable outlet. It helps eliminate 40% of total phosphorous. In line with the European Water Framework Directive (WFD2015), water polished by Aqua-Filter can be discharged into the most sensitive of water courses. Aqua-Filter is designed with an internal flow diversion to bypass the flow when the filter media is saturated awaiting maintenance. In the event of a major storm an internal bypass ensures that any excess water is diverted from the filter to prevent any risk of back-up. The initial flush will, therefore, always be treated and the captured pollutants held until they are removed and disposed of in line with local guidance. Twin or multiple Aqua-Filter system configurations can be implemented to allow for higher treatment flow capabilities beyond that of a single unit. Aqua-Filter should be installed in an off-line configuration using an upstream diversion structure to direct only the designed water quality treatment flow through the Aqua-Filter system. Filter media include but are not limited to Perlite, Zeolite, activated charcoal and organic matter. Systems are sized according to site specific water flow rates, treatment and quality requirements and can even be manufactured to a bespoke size.
Due to its small size and low weight, installation can be easily carried out without recourse to a crane or other heavy machinery.
Maintenance is simple and efficient; Aqua-Filter has no moving parts and provides direct access via inspection chambers from the surface to the sediment and oils accumulated in the filters.
SDS Aqua-Filter is designed to work in an offline configuration to mitigate washout of the contained pollutants and should be installed in sequence immediately following an SDS Aqua-Swirl unit. It is able to deal with large volume surface water runoff, removing very fine silts and dissolved pollutants that are contained in the initial flush. The treatment flow rate of the SDS Aqua-Filter system is engineered to meet or exceed the local water quality treatment criteria and form an intrinsic part of the SuDS solution train.
