Model DCS 1000 Series -Drilling Core Scanner

The drilling core scanner DCS 1000 is a module which provides the opportunity of fast elemental analyzing to a large field of users working in mineralogy, exploration and construction engineering. The system consists of a high power Nd:YAG laser, a high-resolution echelle spectrometer, a laser-safe housing with core holder, linear stages, pilot laser and optional video  monitoring. The analyzing approach is laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. LIBS is an analytical method utilizing laser ablation and the subsequent atomic emission from the plasma for elemental analysis. Laser ablation is at present the only elementanalytical method that offers direct sampling from any kind of material without sample preparation. So LIBS allows a multi-elemental analysis of virtually all types of materials (solids, liquids, gases) through atomic emission spectroscopy.

The DCS 1000 allows the measurement of full circumference and slabbed coreswithout additional sample preparation. All parameters are fully software-controlled by the Sophi software.

 

 

The measurement capabilities can be extended by adding a Raman system. Thus, besides the elemental analyzing, the molecular composition of samples can be determined.

 

 

Software

 

 

The controlling and evaluation software Sophi controls all spectrometer and detector functions. A two-dimensional spectrum is extracted from the detector raw data which is automatically analyzed with an integrated data base. The spectral lines are assigned to the corresponding elements and specified. Quantitative analysis algorithms are integrated as well. For a quantitative evaluation, a calibration with comparable samples is necessary.

 

 

The integrated script language enables the automation of sophisticated or repeated measuring tasks. For spatially resolved measurements, the XYZ-table can be integrated in the script.

 

The optional SDK/LabView allows the complete access to all spectrometer functions and the incorporation into in-house software applications.
