SDS Aqua-Swirl - Hydrodynamic Vortex Stormwater Separators
SDS Aqua-Swirl is a custom engineered, flow through water quality device that utilises hydrodynamic separation technology to maximise the removal of coarse sediment, debris and free floating oil within surface water runoff.
Aqua-Swirl is used as part of a complete water management programme, for example when connected to a GEOlight stormwater attenuation or infiltration system, in order to capture the majority of pollutants and to extend the maintenance schedule of soft SuDs features such as ponds and basins.
- Aqua-Swirl uses hydrodynamic separation technology, operating under gravity flow, to maximise the removal of pollutants that are typically found attached to silts and debris within surface water runoff prior to conveyance to a suitable outlet.
- In addition to recovering oils and floating debris, Aqua-Swirl effectively eliminates more than 80% of total suspended solids.
- Both inlet and outlet pipes can be tailored to site specific requirements, ensuring that Aqua-Swirl can be connected to a pre-existing stormwater management system.
- Systems are sized according to site specific water flow rates, treatment and quality requirements and can even be manufactured to a bespoke size.
- Due to its small size, single sealed unit and low weight, installation can be easily carried out without the need for heavy machinery.
- Maintenance is simple and efficient; Aqua-Swirl has no moving parts and provides direct access via inspection chambers from the surface to the sediment and oils accumulated in the reservoir.
SDS Aqua-Swirl can be installed in both off-line and on-line configurations. It is suitable for use both after and during on-site construction, with the inclusion of a planned maintenance scheme.

SDS Aqua-Swirl is sized according to water quality treatment flow rates which are based on the initial movement of pollutants into the storm drainage system. This flow rate typically represents approximately 90% to 95% of the total pollutants in the runoff volume. The treatment flow rate of the SDS Aqua-Swirl system is engineered to meet or exceed the local water quality treatment criteria and form an intrinsic part of the SuDS solution train.
