Recent catastrophic flooding in New Orleans provides a reminder of the flood risks that face many communities who live within the flood plain of major rivers. Funding for flood protection measures including construction of levees, improvement of water ways and improvements of upstream flood control storage is available from Federal and State Agenciesas an incentive to mitigate future loss of life and property damage.Much of this work is administered by the Corps of Engineers.
As more meteorological and hydrology data is collected during large floods, methods used to forecast extreme floods are being improved. However, this poses a challenge to dam owners since this often results in an increase in the magnitude of reservoir inflow design flood hydrographs which mandate increases in spillway capacity, low level outlet capacity, dam freeboard or changes to reservoir operation.
CAI provides clients with practical solutions to increasing the flood control benefits of existing reservoir storage and addressing modifications to outlet works and reservoir operations. We also perform hydraulic model studies of potential inundation downstream of dams for development or updating of Emergency Action Plans (EAP).
