Greening Cities Services
Every city faces its unique challenges, and each presents unique possibilities. WESTON partners with cities through investment opportunities that incorporate sustainability programs, projects, or measures in ways that save - or even generate - money for the future growth of the municipality. We look for cities with assets where value can be unlocked or increased through sustainability solutions and then help them identify assets to leverage with WESTON’s innovative implementation ideas.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution: Each community has unique characteristics, needs, goals, strengths, and assets. WESTON will work with you to develop a customized approach that fits your situation. We will:
- Develop financial strategies to leverage assets to greater economic and environmental value.
- Implement identified projects to increase your city’s sustainability profile while also adding value to the municipal balance sheet.
- Quantify cost savings and return on investments.
- Identify and secure appropriate financing possibilities.
- Establish strategies for creating local green-jobs.
Complex sustainable solutions are WESTON’s forte—we have more than 50 years of sustainability experience, and a demonstrated history of successful sustainability projects in municipalities throughout the nation.
A Pennsylvania borough set a goal of increasing its energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions by 20% by 2012. WESTON reached out to the Borough to discuss helping reach this goal and learned that the two wastewater treatment facilities owned and operated by the Borough represent over 50% of its carbon emissions. We evaluated the wastewater facilities for both energy and process efficiencies and created a combined renewable energy and energy efficiency conversion solution to meet the Borough’s goals. WESTON drafted a power purchase energy savings agreement that will require no upfront capital by the Borough and provide power at current existing rates with a modest escalation over time, thereby providing price certainty for long term budget management purposes.
Through a public-private venture, WESTON is partnering with Jefferson County and the City of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, to transform a 9-acre blighted and contaminated parcel owned by the Urban Renewal Authority into a consolidated county facility. WESTON will remediate the site and construct a 50,000 SF LEED-certified building under the Agreement. The land is being contributed at no cost in exchange for WESTON providing the required equity and sponsoring the debt. A stand-alone retail pad will also be created and the City and Weston will share in the proceeds of its subsequent development.
