Making a Difference
What can everyone do to help stop Climate Change? There is no doubt that the temperature of the earth has been steadily increasing since the Industrial Revolution. While scientists dispute the cause, the earth keeps getting warmer - a condition that is leading to more intense storms and other climactic changes that may soon be irreversible. If everyone in the industrialized world was mindful of these conditions and made a few simple changes in their habits, the temperature of the earth would be likely to stabilize. There is no harm that can come from preventing further increases in the earth`s temperature, but the consequences will probably be huge if we do not.
First step
Calculate your personal carbon footprint measured in metric tons. Most people have no idea how much they contribute to the problem of global warming.
Second step
Consider purchasing carbon credits to neutralize your carbon footprint. Most American can afford to offset their carbon output and the money goes to help developing nations keep their carbon footprint as low as possible.
Third step
Consider an energy use analysis (audit) of your home. This will provide you with detailed information to help you make educated choices about potential upgrades to insulation and weatherizing, mechanical systems, and lighting.
Final step
Consider the ideas presented below as ways to change old habits and lower your carbon footprint. You may wish to re-calculate your footprint in a few months to see how it has changed with your new habits.
Thermostat
Moving the thermostat in your home down two degrees in winter and up two degrees in summer may save 2000 lbs. of carbon dioxide each year.
Compact Flourescent or LED Bulbs
By switching three frequently used regular bulbs out with CFLs or LED bulbs, you can save 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide each year.
Dishwasher
Running a dishwasher only when full can save 250 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
Water Heater
Setting your water heater no higher than 120 degrees can save 550 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
Short Showers
Most people use 2/3 of their hot water in the shower. Long, lingering showers are a wasteful means of relaxing, so try a new habit of shorter showers.
Furnace Filter
By changing your filter monthly you can save 350 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
Reduce Waste
Purchase products that use less packaging and bring a permanent water bottle to work and the gym instead of a plastic bottle. Recycle everything you can at home and work. Compost organic matter to make your own fertilizer.
Buying Habits
Consider supporting local farmers and businesses - this supports your local economy and reduces the carbon dioxide associated with shipping goods to you. Ask the places you shop at frequently to provide you with a list of ways they are going green - most will know exactly what you mean. If everyone did this, businesses would respond by becoming leaders in sustainability.
Car Tires
Properly inflated tires can save 250 lbs. of carbon dioxide by helping your car get better gas mileage.
Car Air Filter
A dirty air filter can significantly decrease gas mileage. Changing yours monthly can save 800 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
Car Idling
If stuck in traffic for more than 30 seconds, turn off the engine of non-hybrid vehicles.
