As well as holding the most comprehensive site licence in the UK for the processing and treatment of redundant electrical equipment, Celtic Recycling is also registered with HM Revenue and Customs as a licensed Bonded Distributor, which maximises the cost-benefit to similarly licensed clients when disposing of surplus oil stocks.
The risk of contamination associated with leakage of insulation oil during processing waste from electrical plant is high and a responsible waste management approach is essential. Celtic Recycling has constructed extensive engineering safeguards at its Bridgend premises to eliminate this risk. These safeguards include fully-contained site perimeter drainage, high risk area bunding, contiguous, inter-linked heavy-duty steel containment bays in the PCB-processing area, oversized oil interceptors, with a high-grade, virtually impervious micro-silica concreted site - all supported upon a heavy duty geo-membrane which completely underlies the site to provide an impermeable seal. In the unlikely event of oil spillage on site, contamination would be totally contained, preventing adverse environmental impacts.
Oil with greater than 50 mg/Kg has historically been treated through high-temperature incineration – which also destroys more than 99.99% of mineral oil contained within the contaminated matrix. However, Celtic Recycling has recently developed a de-chlorination process which effectively destroys the PCB molecule and allows for the recovery of the residual non-contaminated oil. This innovative process will eliminate the need for wasteful high-temperature incineration of the mineral oil and adds to the company’s already impressive recycling portfolio.
