The Cumberland County Redevelopment Authority planned a new industrial park, for which treatment capacity was required. Aqueonics supplied an extended aeration-type plant for secondary treatment, and overland flow discharge of disinfected effluent. Although capacity for commercial discharge flow equalization was provided, anticipation of the quality of influent was very much an unknown, and anticipation of severe underloading and its effect on Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) retention was of concern. In our thinking of today, a fixed media surface system has been preferable for such applications.

This facility was constructed for The Verland Foundation to serve a campus of group homes for severely mentally impaired children. Aqueonics constructed the small extended aeration facility to treat effluent to secondary standards, sand filter and disinfect the effluent for overland flow discharge to a spring-fed pond on adjoining property. This facility was in use until around 1997 when development surrounding the Foundation property required public sewerage in excess of the capacity of this plant. At that time, Aqueonics designed and built a conversion of this plant into an aerated equalized pump station to pump effluent nearly 2,000 feet over a hill to a point where it could be connected to an extension of public sewer.
Special requirements of this facility related to issues typical of institutions and regulations related to the disposal of unused foodstuffs, but more particularly to the wide variety of unusual solids which routinely entered the plant and swings in flow. Dual grinders and barscreens were employed with grit chamber, foam suppression, extra clarification and continuous backwash sand filtration.
This facility was placed in service in 1980.
