  • Airport Environmental Monitoring

    Water pollution from airport run-off is increasingly coming under public and government scrutiny. As environmental regulations tighten, the ability to monitor for aviation fuel contamination from runway run-off has become essential.

    Monitoring sites at airports can be extremely challenging often with no power or telephone lines available and with limited access for maintenance. Chelsea’s robust UviLux Hydrocarbon Sensor with its low power consumption and high accuracy is ideally suited for this application. Installed at various locations around the airport, deployed with it’s own integrated anti-biofouling system, utilising the GSM network, the monitoring sites send data to a secure ftp site, where any internet enabled device can access the data. In this way the systems act as any early warning system allowing any hydrocarbon discharge to be detected in real-time.

    Optional environmental monitoring features include remote control to allow the user to turn equipment on and off, change the sample rate and detection range.     Airport runoff can contain high concentrations of various pollutants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the environmental levels of which have to be monitored. An understanding of the magnitude of contamination due to airport runoff water is important for the effective management of airport infrastructure.     The frequency and intensity of dust and sand storms in many parts of the world are steadily increasing due to droughts and climate change. These dust storms may last hours or days and cause huge damage and imposed a heavy toll on society with its physical effects, such as visibility reduction, heavy winds, red sky, hailstone and severe lightning. Such Dust storms, have a negative impact on human health, and industrial products and activities. Traditional dust monitoring instruments whether they be purely filter based gravimetric samplers or continuous monitors utilising Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) or Beta Attenuation (BAM) simply are unable to cope with the high dust loads created by these storms. The filters on these instruments are quickly clogged and no further measurements are possible until a service technician visits to replace filters and filter tapes. In dust storm events this is impossible. Therefore, over the past few years a need for alternate technology which are non filter based, can cope with extremely high dust loads, require minimal maintenance and can operate off solar power has been employed in regions such as the Gobi Desert of China for the continuous monitoring of dust storm events. These instruments have demonstrated that an instrument can measure dust storm events with maintenance performed only once every 12 months. That it is possible to communicate remotely and that these systems can not only provide an early warning for dust events but have the accuracy and sensitivity to be an extremely useful tool in gauging hourly changes of visibility. Infact such instruments have been utilised by a number of EPAs around the world, including all Australian EPAs for the purpose of measuring ambient visibility as well as providing an accurate indication of rising dust events.

    Capabilities of the Adsorbent Tube Injector System (ATIS™)

    The Adsorbent Tube Injector System (ATIS) was developed at Supelco® by R&D Scientists, as a tool to assist in our comprehensive adsorbent research for thermal desorption tubes. The ATIS provides an efficient means of transferring calibration standards in either the gas or liquid phase onto the adsorbent packed tubes. The ATIS employs the technique of flash vaporization to vaporize the sample in a continuous flow of inert gas; the inert gas carries the sample to the tube. The sample pathway of the ATIS is constructed of glass and stainless steel. The calibration standard is injected by a syringe through a replaceable septum in the center of the injection glassware, which is heated. After enough time has elapsed, typically less than five minutes, the tube is removed from the ATIS and analyzed using the appropriate analytical technique for that adsorbent tube.
