As energy and ecological activities are closely interrelated, specific environmental expertise is essential in order to operate in the sector of industrial utilities.Environmental services have become one of EDF Fenice’s major areas of business, not restricted simply to environment-related activities and research addressing industrial activities and processes but also including environmental consulting and services for major works – in both the public and private sectors – involving ecological, biological, bio-chemical and bio-physical laboratory activities.

The problem of contaminated sites is at the top of the list of priorities of environmental and reclamation programmes both in Italy and in most European countries. Contaminated sites are all those areas where pollution caused by on-going or past human activity has altered the natural characteristics of the land to such an extent as to be hazardous for public health or the environment. This definition comprises chemical-physical or biological contamination or alteration of the subsoil, surface and ground waters, especially at active or decommissioned industrial sites and also those affected by not environmentally correct waste disposal.

The EDF Fenice Environmental Services Centre (ESC) has been active in the field of Environmental Monitoring systems for many years, providing a complete service comprising two main lines of activity:

The specialist environmental monitoring and reclamation activities of the EDF Fenice Environmental Services Centre (ESC) are supported and integrated by analysis laboratories specialised in the evaluation of chemical agents and physical agents.Around 100 technicians and researchers, almost 40% of whom are scientific graduates, operate at the Rivoli (Turin) and Pomigliano d`Arco (Naples) sites, which are equipped with sophisticated, state-of-the-art recording and analysis facilities.

As it requires high level expertise and top-flight professional competence, environmental consulting is a core element of the integrated range of environment-related services offered by EDF Fenice to public companies and bodies via its Environmental Services Centre (ESC). The main activities of the environmental consulting service are carried out within the framework of Audits and Environment Management Systems, in addition to specific technical-legal assistance.
