Pre- treating thickened activated sludge with Eurosonics before anaerobic digestion improves the rate of digestion in many cases. Ultrasonic disintegration of activated sludge has been shown to disintegrate sludge flocs and to encourage enzymatic biological hydrolysis which is the rate limiting step for anaerobic digestion. Troublesome filamentous organisms are destroyed so that foaming can be eliminated. Dewatering properties of digested sludge can be improved.
