Walter Herding set up a company in Amberg, Germany in April 1977. The firm manufactured complete dust extraction systems, but by 1982 Herding had outgrown its office and production facilities and had to move to a new location. Ever since, Herding has continued to expand the admin, R&D, production and logistic facilities at its Amberg North site.

International footprint
The signing of a licensing agreement with Eurotec/Nittetsu Mining in Japan was the first step on the road to international expansion (the agreement is still in effect). The first foreign subsidiary was established in Switzerland in 1988, and the first foreign production facility went into operation in the Czech Republic in 1991. The company now has eight independent subsidiaries and partnerships in nine other countries.

The Herding success story really began with the invention of, and patent application for, a surface filtration process using rigid-body filter elements in 1980. The rigid body filter element went into volume production the following year. The Herding HSL sinter plate filter was introduced five years later.

Other milestones include the development of a bio filter for effective treatment of industrial effluent (1991), introduction of the Herding DELTA (1997) and the Herding DELTA² filter (2003), development of the high-temperature Herding ALPHA for applications up to 350/450°C (2000) and the Herding HSL-C sinter plate filter for temperatures up to 100°C (2008).

Initially, Herding produced cloth and needle felt filters for mining and rock processing applications. As Herding continued to move up the performance curve with its HSL, DELTA und DELTA² rigid-body filters, the company gained access to new markets. The target market now includes the basic materials industry, where it all started, as well as the food processing, pharmaceutical and renewable energy industries.

In 1993, Herding set up a company for biological treatment of effluent. In 2008, this segment was assimilated into the Fluid Technology Business Unit which focuses its activities on fluid and coolant filtration.

BLUECOMPETENCE stands for leadership in innovation and technology in the field of sustainable solutions in the mechanical and plant engineering industry.

Our basic approach is to provide products and services which enhance customer productivity over the long term. It is vitally important that we maintain short lines of communication to the customer. Our customer focus can be represented symbolically in the form of a circle.
Corporate structure

Direct contact with domestic and foreign customers takes place in the T domain channeled through the field teams in Amberg (TAD and AAD) and the local subsidiaries (TGS).  In cases where we have subsidiaries or partners outside of Germany, the process is described in the Locations section. In keeping with the proximity principle, the in-house team (TID) and services (TDL) in their role as service department have the option of contacting customers directly, but the sales team always remains the main point of contact. The R&D Department is always directly involved in new product and process development.

Products are manufactured by the steel fabrication (PSB) and sintered filter media (PSF) production organizations. The two streams are merged in final assembly (PEM). The entire production process for filtration systems including filter elements takes place under one roof.  Our business management section (K) has responsibility for admin activities and quality assurance which reports directly to Senior Management. QA monitors the quality of our products and our management system.

The depth of our manufacturing in Germany stands guarantee for the quality, flexibility and safety of our plant engineering.

Our policy of maintaining short lines of communication to our customers is reflected in the topology of our sales network.

Engineers, who are full-time employees and are stationed at headquarters or in one of 5 offices, provide a highly effective communications channel. These individuals are the main point of contact for the customer starting with order intake and continuing right through to after-sales service and beyond.

Our foreign subsidiaries are autonomous entities which have highly qualified employees working under the direction of a General Manager. The subsidiaries are part of Herding Holding. This ensures that the Herding philosophy and the products comply with corporate standards.

In countries where we do not have a local subsidiary, we work with qualified partners who receive training in Amberg and have access to support from Amberg when necessary.

For all other countries, engineers working in the AAD Department in Amberg handle queries and quotations and provide advice, giving us a worldwide presence.
