SITE CHARACTERISTICS
The aim of this pilot study was to verify the efficiency of sulfidized nanoiron (S-nZVI) in reductive dehalogenation of highly chlorinated ethenes (primarily TCE) in the field conditions. S-nZVI has earned a reputation as a promising material due to its high reactivity towards some pollutants, its increased mobility, and its longevity caused due to suppressed corrosion. The remediation company DEKONTA decided to use S-nZVI for treatment of deeply located TCE contam
SITE CHARACTERISTICS
Together with partners from the Czech Republic (Dekonta, a.s.) and Belgium (ABO and Adviesbureau inzake Grondwater Technieken n.v), NANO IRON works on research and development of in-situ remediation technologies based on hydraulic fracturing of subsurface. The main benefit of the method is a possibility of application of the remediation suspensions in a geological environment in which the remediation is difficult.

SITE CHARACTERISTICS
Heterogenous aquifer (combination of sand, gravel and clay) together with a deep localization of CHCs contamination plume predetermine this site to be difficult to treat. Therefore, the remediation company DEKONTA arrived at an inventive decision to combine the direct-push injected NANOFER particles with a subsequent employment of the thermally enhanced in-situ bioremediation supported by the application of organic substrate (lactate).
REMEDIATION APPROACH</
Massive contamination by chlorinated ethenes (CHCs) under an engineering plant showed to be problem for a near groundwater receiving river. The innovative approach including formation of nZVI reactive geochemical barrier was chosen by the remediation company MEGA. Moreover, a prolongation of activity of the applied NANOFER was achieved thanks to the usage of DC.
Long-term monitoring and remediation actions have been performed on site
Remediation company EKORA in collaboration with company NANO IRON, producer of zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI), conducted pilot injection of surface stabilized nanoparticles of elemental iron (NANOFER 25S) and their subsequent full-scale application to eliminate groundwater contamination of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) at KARA Trutnov site in Czech Republic.

Treatment of an old disposal site proved to be a challenging task due to its improper placement and insufficient ensuring. The site is located in a very complex geological environment and in imminence of the source of drinking water. Therefore, the soluble in-situ reagents cannot be applied here. NANOFER slurry was chosen by the remediation company AQUATEST for removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) from a deep aquifer in fractured rocks.

NanoRem (Taking Nanotechnological Remediation Processes from Lab Scale to End User Applications for the Restoration of a Clean Environment) is a research project, funded through the European Commission’s Framework 7 research programme. NanoRem focuses on facilitating practical, safe, economic and exploitable nanotechnology for in situ remediation. This is being undertaken in parallel with developing a comprehensive understanding of the environmental risk-benefit for the use of nanoparti

Site Remediation
The Spolchemie site was chosen as one of the NanoRem case study sites, to test two types of nanoparticles (NPs) (zerovalent iron - nZVI and iron oxide NPs) for in situ remediation of BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes) contamination. Nanoremediation was seen as an opportunity to enhance the in situ biodegradation of the BTEX contaminants and to reduce the current remediation method of skimming free product from the groundwater surface wate
