Nelson is the only Canadian company which performs on-site, ex-situ thermal treatment of hydrocarbon and organic compound contaminated soil, returning clean soil to beneficial re-use.
The Alberta born company was hatched by Darryl and Warren Nelson after being left with the responsibility of their father’s earth-moving company, which served Western Canada’s oil and gas industry for 25 years prior to the early 1990’s.
Since its humble beginnings, Nelson has grown into a leader with it’s self-developed remediation technology and industry-leading process.
- NER employs advanced thermal extraction and destruction technology that performs two main environmental protection functions:
- the TDU system delivers certainty of extracting organic contaminants from the soil to achieve remediation criteria and eliminate liability associated with contaminated soil
- the TDU system guarantees thermal destruction of the extracted organic contaminants thereby preventing toxic emissions
The Nelson history is one of earth moving, soil handling, construction and agriculture since the 1960’s, and providing soil remediation via thermal desorption units (TDU) technology since 1994 via Nelson Environmental Remediation Ltd.
Nelson has extensive industry experience, processing more than 2,000,000 tonnes of contaminated soil on locations across more than 12 time zones (from Hawaii and throughout continental N America, to Europe & Africa) and conditions ranging from the extremes of the Canadian Arctic winter at -50 degrees Celsius, to the tropics at +40 degrees Celsius. Nelson has treated soil contaminated with materials from light Bakken crude to heavy end laden coal tar, on soil varying from sandy to heavy clays.
As well as providing remediation of contaminated soil to beneficial reuse , Nelson provides full service operations, performing excavation, soil handling, reclamation and other services. The Alberta business also specializes in large scale clean-ups, often remote, where the value of on-site liability elimination is realized at costs comparable to non sustainable options such as offsite landfill disposal that simply defer liability.
The Thermal Desorption Unit process provides an onsite sustainable soil remediation tehcnolgy that consderves the soil on site for beneficial re-use whiel eleimianting transportaiotn liabilities, delivered under a broad range of conditions.
From Humble Beginnings
From humble beginnings, Nelson Environmental Remediation Ltd. has become a global leader in the soil remediation industry. How the Alberta born and bred remediation business came to be and continues to evolve as a proven success in the ever changing and growing industry didn’t just happen.
It took the experience, drive and dedicated minds of two Alberta brothers. After being left with their father’s earth-moving company in the early 1980s, Darryl and Warren Nelson were left with a new found, large responsibility that had served Western Canada’s oil and gas industry for 20 years prior under their father’s company John Nelson Construction, Ltd. With hard work in their blood growing up as Alberta farm boys, the two took the new challenge and pioneered a new industry and a slogan they’ve developed and formed a global reputation for Clean Dirt, No Doubt.
In 1992, the two founded Nelson Environmental Remediation and began creating a business and process that took contaminated soil and transformed it back into beneficial re-use soil.
Using the Low Temperature Thermal Desorption (TDU) process, Nelson uses their mobile fleet to offer on-site extraction and destruction of organic soil contaminants resulting in beneficial re-use soil for their clients.
Headed by CEO Darryl and Vice-President and COO Warren, Nelson can claim leadership based on their years of experience, expertise and documented success in the soil remediation industry.
With their home base located just west of the City of Edmonton off Highway 16A near the City of Spruce Grove, Nelson continues to work hard on expanding their projects and educating prospective clients on why their process is the best.
Years of Experience
Soil is in our history. Soil remediation is our purpose.
Since 1994, Nelson has developed expertise in employing mobile, on site TDU technology for the remediation of soil contaminated with hydrocarbon and other organic compounds under extreme conditions. Nelson maintains the largest fleet of mobile TDU’s in North America and, with its extensive experience, is able to compete on a global scale. The Alberta business offers a cost effective and guaranteed solution with many additional values provided, depending on project scope.
Fast-forward to today and Nelson’s process isn’t questioned. It’s proven and a testament to that fact is the long-time management staff, who are all individually approaching 25 years of experience within the remediation industry, which is a claim not many other companies can make.
With many completed projects just in Alberta dating back to their first with Imperial Oil in Devon in June 1996, Nelson continues to work hard on growing and educating those in the industry on how their process not only creates beneficial re-use soil, but also removes numerous liabilities off the road and creates several positive social outcomes
To safely and efficiently deliver “Clean Dirt, No Doubt!”
Nelson hasn’t just experienced success locally either.
They’ve completed projects across the United States and internationally — global projects include Europe and Africa.
The management group also attends numerous networking conferences internationally, looking to showcase their experience, their expertise and passion for creating beneficial re-use material.
With success and new projects coming in over the years, the industry’s players have taken notice.
Nelson was a finalist in 2015 EY’s Entrepreneur Of the Year Awards in the Environmental Innovation category and won the Clean Technology category of the 2015 Alberta Export Awards in recognition of their work around the world. They have also been recognized by the Canadian Government for their use of environmental technology. The technology is regarded as a B.A.T (Best Available Technology).
Nelson continues to grow and were profiled in the January 2016 edition of Business in Canada highlighting their inception and how they became and remain a success in the remediation industry. Nelson started with a staff of just five and now have grown to more than 50, cementing the fact the business is growing and has the right people to provide a self-developed process they can claim is the only one in Canada.
Recently, Nelson has obtained such permits from areas as the State of North Dakota, State of Colorado, the State of Hawaii (via Hawaii Department of Health) and is actively seeking market expansion in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Nelson also has project experience overseas and in the continental United States under strict EPA guidance.
As new technology, legislation and ideas come forth, adapting to change is the key to success for any business and if the past 23 years are any indication to what’s ahead for Nelson, the homegrown business is in the right hands moving forward.
