Air Modeling Services

Dispersion Modeling Services

Sullivan Environmental staff dispersion modelers have over 30 years of experience each. This firm performs air dispersion modeling using the following computer models: AERMOD, CALPUFF 5.0, CALPUFF 6.0, CAL3QHC, INPUFF, ISCST3, TOXST, ISCPRIME, and SCREEN3. We utilize several different pre- and post-processing meteorological and source processing programs including PCRAMMET, BPIP, CALMET, CALPOST, SLAB, and others to support the modeling depending on the types of sources, meteorological datasets, and the specific project application(s). Sullivan Environmental has also developed various dispersion models such as TOXST, the Fumigant Emissions Modeling System (FEMS), and RISKMAN. The RISKMAN model was designed to assess emissions from dense gas facilities and accidental release scenarios. This model can be used to refine hazard zones for risk management programs (RMP).

Exposure Assessment Services

Exposure assessment, risk assessment, and risk management are the three major components of assessing risks from exposure to air pollutants. The staff of Sullivan Environmental is in the forefront of developing methods for exposure assessment and conducts research for the U.S. EPA and industrial clients aimed at identifying exposures from specific source categories. Risk assessment involves the review of average and worst case exposures in relation to cancer potency scores relative to threshold limit values for non-cancer endpoints. Through identification of the upper-bound risks by pollutant and source category, the priority sources and pollutants for subsequent control analyses can be identified. Risk management involves evaluating the most cost-effective and practical ways to reduce risk (average exposures and maximum exposures). Sullivan Environmental Consulting has been involved in all of these areas with exposure assessment as the primary area of expertise.

Air Permitting Services

Sullivan Environmental Consulting, INC. routinely performs dispersion modeling to support permit applications, e.g., Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permits, state air permits, and modeling to support Title V.

Urban Scale Air Quality Assessment Services

Some firms have experience modeling individual industrial facilities to support permit applications. The true challenge for a modeler is to address the analysis on an urban-scale, model all quantifiable source categories in a metropolitan area, and determine how realistic the assessment is relative to measured air quality data.

Risk Management Planning Services

A risk management plan can be viewed as both a burden and an opportunity. The burden is associated with the amount of analysis and record keeping required to file a complete application. The opportunity, on the other hand, is the ability to upgrade the safety of industrial operations through a systematic review of all relevant operations.

Meteorological Litigation Support Services

Air Quality and Meteorological Related Expert Testimony. Sullivan Environmental has well-recognized expertise in providing expert testimony for litigation involving air quality and meteorological issues. With two Certified Consulting Meteorologists that have over 35 years of professional experience each, high quality expert analysis and testimony is provided on a cost-effective basis. David Sullivan has been deposed and testified on numerous air quality related cases as well as injury and wrongful death cases associated with weather-related events.

Air Sampling Services

With over 40,000 hours of air sampling pump operational experience, Sullivan Environmental Consulting, Inc. is an industry leader in the air sampling business. Established in 1988, this east coast consulting firm has the capability to provide nationwide active and passive air sampling services whether your need be remote rural ambient airborne particulate sampling or industrial indoor odor sampling. After analysis by our partner laboratories, staff Certified Consulting Meteorologists can provide modeling support for ambient applications if necessary.

Wind and Meteorological Data Acquisition Services

Sullivan Environmental currently maintains state of the art portable meteorological towers (six towers) that can be assembled at elevations up to 20 feet at virtually any location in the country where meteorological data is needed. Services provided include tower installation, calibration, and data extraction. These stations can log accurate data for about one month at a time without extraction (averaging readings by the minute).

Odor Sampling and Analysis Services

Sullivan Environmental has the capacity to conduct odor sampling and analysis via preliminary dilution threshold sampling using a Field Olfactometer.  Subsequent air samples can be taken via a Vac-u-chamber sampling pump and stored tedlar bags. These samples are then sent overnight to our partner laboratory for odor panel analysis.  Typical odor sampling planning requires a pre-arranged scheduling with the laboratory (typically a one week notice) to insure that the required personnel are present during the 30 hour required turn around time from the air sample extraction to the actual analysis.  Sullivan Environmental certified consulting meteorologists can supplement air sample results with dispersion modeling analysis if deemed necessary by the client.
