Legionella, a potential risk to public health
The severe pneumonia that can be caused by Legionella pneumophila bacterium in humans is known as legionellosis or Legionnaires` Disease. This disease can have a fatal outcome in certain cases. The infection occurs via the respiratory tract, especially through the inhalation of aerosols in which these pathogens are located. Aerosols consist of very fine particles or liquid droplets in the air. It follows that the sources of aerosol formation can be seen as a potential risk of contamination and danger to public health. Possible sources of infection are such things as showers, cooling towers, air conditioning systems, fountains, sprinklers and hot tubs.
The growth of Legionella is strongly enhanced in stagnant water at temperatures between 20 ° C and 40 ° C and a relatively neutral pH. Legionella itself is fairly easy to destroy, but it is difficult to do so because these bacteria often nest in host organisms such as amoebas and biofilms. Since temperatures higher than 50 ° C are lethal for Legionella, thermal disinfection of the water is possible. However, this involves a costly process and is not always effective in the treatment of biofilms.
