Experience since 1984

BTA International GmbH offers engineering services based on 30 years of experience, proven and patented wet pre-treatment systems as well as turnkey plants based on the BTA® Process.

Already in 1991 the first industrial anaerobic digestion plant for biowaste based on the BTA® Process was built. Since then 49 plants world-wide have been designed according to the overall BTA® Process or with key components from the wet mechanical pre-treatment with a total capacity of approx. 1,2 million tons per year (see reference list).

More than 110 million Nm³ biogas are annually produced in BTA Plants, which corresponds to the energy equivalent of approx. 70 million Nm³ natural gas.

In every modern society meaningful utilisation of wastes is of major importance:

  1. since wastes are inevitably associated with prosperity and growth,
  2. since wastes have to be disposed of in a hazard-free and environmentally friendly manner,

At an early stage, BTA had recognised that the separation of  wastesinto manageable fractions at highest possible purity and their appropriate treatment are prerequisites for an environmentally compatible handling of residues. Therefore, BTA International has developed the BTA® Process to a pre-commercial stage already in the 1980s. This method ensures removal of all impurities at an early stage, the wet mechanical pre-treatment, and combines this step with operationally safe digestion of the digestible organic fraction. The core of the BTA® Process consists of the wet mechanical pre-treatment by means of the BTA® Waste Pulper and the BTA® Grit Removal System.

The BTA® Process is characterized by these outstanding benefits: 

  • removal (over 90 %) of all impurities as
    - light materials: plastics, foil, wood, etc. or
    - heavy materials: sand, glass, metal, etc.
  • maximum biogas yield: over 90 % enrichment of the degradable organic fraction in an easily manageable suspension
  • high operational safety, minimum processing costs
  • closed nutrient cycle possible through quality compost
  • decreased need for landfill capacity: < 5 % organic material among heavy and grit fraction
  • cost reduction for the combustion or recycling of plastics or for the synthesis of refuse derived fuels (RDF)
  • no sediments imposing wear on plant components during all processing stages

1983/84: Foundation of the REA GmbH and the BTA Biotechnische Abfallverwertung GmbH & Co. KG as related enterprises for the development and marketing of waste processing technologies.

1984/86: Development of the basic technological concept in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences, Munich.
First application of the BTA® Waste Pulper.

1987-1995: 10 years pilot plant in Munich-Garching for the pre-commercial development of a waste treatment method.
Testing of process technology, materials, wear, and usability. Development of the BTA® Waste Pulper, BTA® Grit Removal System, and the BTA® Control Syste'm.
Optimisation as the BTA® Process for miscellaneous wastes from municipal, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sources.

1991: First industrial anaerobic digestion plant for biowaste  based on the BTA® Process at Helsingør, Denmark.
Thereafter, further employment of know-how, components, and wet mechanical pre-treatment systems as well as the BTA® Process in various waste digestion plants.

1997-1999: International licensees:

  • Biotec Sistemi S.r.I. (Italy)
  • CCI Canadian Composting Inc. (Northern Amerika)
  • Hitachi Zosen Corporation (Japan)

2000: First agricultural biogas plant from BTA at Karlshof, Germany

2004: Licensee in the U.K./Ireland: Enpure Ltd. (terminated due to the shutdown of Enpure's operations)

2006: First contract covering the refurbishment of an existing wet mechanical pre-treatment plant at EcoParc I, Barcelona, Spain.

2007: BTA and Agraferm Technologies AG  jointly found the BTA International GmbH to concentrate their long-standing experience. BTA International becomes operative unit of the Agraferm Technologies Group for anaerobic waste processing.

Since 2007: Further development of the BTA technolgy and new patents. Since then 15 projects have been executed in Europe and North America.
