Cartridge and bag filters are an excellent source for filtration of sediment particles with micron ratings from 0.2 up to 200+ microns. Most cartridge type sediment filters are designed to flow water through the exterior wall of the filter then into the inner core. This allows an even flow of water through the complete length and circumference of the filter cartridge. This is especially true with depth filters. Iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, referred to as troublesome trio, reap havoc on plumbing systems. As little as 0.05 ppm of manganese, 0.5 ppm of iron, and less amount of sulfide can cause staining and rust of plumbing systems. To battle this trio, people have used Ion exchange water softeners and Oxidation/Reduction media. Ion Exchange works only on dissolved iron and manganese, but not sulfur, and imparts a foul smell to the water. So, it is best to apply oxidation media treated with a coating of Manganese Dioxide. There are various media such as Birm, Pyrolox, Filox, and Greensand Plus available in the market. All these media have different proportions of manganese dioxide coatings. The one that is widely used and effective is Pyrolox.
