Our pocket penetrometer provides rapid estimates of unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils. Although pocket or hand penetrometers are used widely for checking consistency and providing rapid estimates of compressive strengths in the field, they should not be used to replace laboratory testing or extensive field analysis. In addition, hand penetrometers can be used to accurately indicate consistency and approximate unconfined compressive strengths of undisturbed cohesive soil core samples.

Our 1" Pocket Penetrometer Adapter Foot is available as an option for use in low-strength cohesive soils. Push the adapter foot in until the soil reaches the top of the foot where it begins to taper. Multiply readings by .0625 to compensate for the larger surface area.
