Hand Tooling - Geotechnical Sampling and Testing

AMS - Pocket Penetrometer

The AMS pocket penetrometer provides accurate measurements of the compressive soil strength. This 6-1/4in unit is spring-operated, and it is measures strength in tons/sq. ft. or kg/sq. cm by pushing a 1/4in diameter loading piston into soil to a depth of 0.25in. The end area is 0.05in2. Compressive load is indicated by reading a scale on the piston barrel. A friction ring indicates maximum reading. Made of anodized aluminum. An Allen wrench and plastic carrying case with belt loop are included. A special 1in-diameter adapter foot is available as an option for use in very sensitive soils. A pocket penetrometer is required by OSHA on all excavation jobs, and it can help protect you from costly lawsuits and construction delays.

AMS - Pocket Vane Shear Test Kit

Easy to use with easy-to-read results: Regular vane (0 to 1 kg/cm²) : For saturated cohesive soils with undrained strength , independent of normal pressure. Large vane (0.2 kg/cm²): use with remolded samples. Small vane (2.5 kg/cm²): for stiffer clays.

AMS - Geo Tester Penetrometer

Geotester dial penetrometer set is used for on-site measurement of soil compaction by testing the foundation plane or boring samples. It gives readings of estimated unconfined compressive strength in TSF or kg/cm2 when used with the standard 1/4` dia plunger. The geotester is furnished with stainless steel plungers, carrying case, data tables, register plates and instructions.

AMS - Borehole Preparation Kit

Improve effectiveness of geotechnical testing and sampling with a pre-bored hole. Includes: 5/8` threaded, 2 1/4` regular auger and 2 1/4` 5/8` planer auger, one 4` 5/8` extension, one 3` 5/8` extension, rubber-coated cross handle, black poly-canvas bag.

AMS - Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometers (DCPs)

Developed by the Army Corps of Engineers, Dynamic Cone Penetrometers (DCPs) provide a low-cost, efficient test method for quickly determining in-situ CBR values of pavement base, subbase and subgrades. They can readily be used for depths up to 30" and up to 6` with optional drive rods and extensions. This model complies with ASTM D6951 specifications and comes with a chart to compute CBR values, as well as an Excel spreadsheet template, which automatically charts the test results.

AMS - Static Cone Penetrometer

Evaluate the consistency, compaction and bearing of fine grained, soft soils. The static cone penetrometer is used to evaluate the consistency of soils, their level of compaction and the bearing capacity of shallow foundations and pavement subgrades. Specifically developed for use in fine grained soils, particularly soft soils, to depths of 30`. They use a 60 degree vertex angled cone with an area of 1.5 cm squared. An optional cone with a 3 cm squared area is available for use in very soft soils.

AMS - Dynamic Cone Penetrometer

The most widely accepted, portable method for evaluating strength and density of soil, in situ. The dynamic cone penetrometer uses a 15 lb. (6.8 kg) drive mass falling 20 in. (50.8 cm) that strikes the anvil to cause penetration of 1.5 in (3.8 cm) diameter cone (45 degree vertex angle) that has been seated in the bottom of a pre-augered hole. The blows required to drive the embedded cone a depth of 1 3/4` have been correlated by others to N values derived from the Standard Penetration Test (SPT). Experience has shown effectiveness in pre-augered holes to depths of 15` - 20` (4.6 to 6.1 cm). The cone can be replaced with a plated drive tube assemble for collection of 3` x 10` (7.6 x 25.4 cm) samples in preaugured holes.

AMS - Field Vane Shear Tester

Take direct readings of shear strength to depths up to 10 ft (3 meters) in soft to stiff clays. Three (3) vane sizes allow for the direct determination of un-drained shear strength of soft to stiff clays. The peak vane value is determined by a calibrated scale ring built into the head assembly. The cross handle is used both to push the vane to the desired test depth and apply the shearing torque. To correct for the skin friction of the extension rods, a dummy probe replaces the vane and a skin friction test is performed adjacent to the vane test location. Includes: Torque head assembly, six (6) extensions rods, three (3) vane (0.63` x 1.25` 16 x 32 mm, 0.79` x 1.58` [20 x 40 mm], 1` x 2` [25.4 x 50.8 mm]), skin friction probe, double-ended wrench, leather carrying pouch. Material: stainless steel and anodized aluminum.

AMS Eijkelkamp - Penetrologger Kit

The penetrologger has been especially developed to measure the resistance to penetration of the soil and to save the measuring results to digitally process them on a computer. The penetrologger is ergonomically designed, and lightweight. It can be used to measure to a depth of 80 cm. The penetrologger can provide the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), the Vehicle Cone Index (VCI), and Cone Index (CI) per measurement.

AMS - Infiltration Rings

AMS infiltration rings are a simple and relatively inexpensive method for monitoring infiltration rates. They can also be used to study liquid waste disposal, leaching and drainage efficiencies. The rings are centered by the cross handle – which is welded in place at the top of the unit. The rings are inserted into the turf by pushing and twisting on this cross handle. An optional dead blow hammer may also be used to pound the rings into the turf. Unlike other infiltration rings on the market, the AMS infiltration rings are constructed of rolled 16 gauge mild steel with gold zinc plating – instead of being made of galvanized steel. They are also plated with corrosion resistant gold zinc plating. This substantially increases the durability of each unit. A user manual and correlation chart is included with each unit.
